THE HURT DIALOGUE

I’ve told you before, and I’ll tell you again, I’m not anyone’s stepmother. I told you before I married you that you could cheat all you wanted, but you could never bring back a bastard. Deep Sigh* Look at you, making me sound like a horrible person, look at what you’ve done to me. I’d like you to think back eight years Nate, and ask yourself if I am still the same person you met. Do I still have the same gleam in my eyes that you fell in love with? Are you unconcerned about the shell of a woman walking around your house?

Nate, I’ve put up with your shit over the years, I’ve put up with your numerous girlfriends, I’ve put up with your family’s shit. I’ve put up with your so-called business partners, constantly degrading me over the dinner table while you sit there laughing like a fool.

After dragging you in here to talk sense into you about not being able to stand up to your business partners on my behalf, you tell me I now have to put up with you impregnating your misstress and your bloodhound of a family wants me to care for your bastard.

Oh Nate, Tola said as she tried to find the right words to say to her husband.

I will not be caring for another woman’s child. Leave that child with it’s mother. Screw your family protocol; it’s the twenty-first century, and they need to leave all that nonsense in the past.

And Nate, you need to stop treating me like trash. Stop throwing shit at me to throw me off balance. You realize you’ll actually never be able to get rid of me, Nate; the family will never let you. If it had been that simple, I would have walked out on you years ago.

Now i need you to go back out there and shutdown that misogynistic nonsense your business partner has been throwing at me over the table. For God’s sake, be the man I married!. She said this as she attempted to return to the dinner party.

Nate began to laugh hysterically and paused to speak .”oh please, Tola, when did you become such a bitch”? he said while gasping for air. The way you speak so loftily and authoritatively, as if you are the most perfect creature who came to this world with a marriage manual. Please, wipe the astonishment from your face. You know this isn’t the first time I’ve referred to you as a bitch.

“Tola, you cheated on me with a much younger man two years into our marriage. A 25-year-old with no idea what he wanted to do with his life,” He said as he gazed deeply into his wife’s eyes and not breaking contact.

“After I said those vows, I dedicated my life to you.I worshiped the ground you walked on. You were my wife, I loved you in the way that the bible instructs a man to love his wife, but you threw it back in my face by opening your legs for a 25-year-old who did nothing for you but fuck your brains out when I was out of town.”

He continued to express his feelings to his wife, who was too shocked to say anything.

“I knew you loved the money attached to my family, and I knew you were a social climber, but I loved you regardless, because I had more than enough wealth to be concerned about a woman digging for some gold. I just wanted to tell you how much I loved you, give you everything you need to be happy.” He said this as he took a step back from her, trying to keep the tears from falling.

“I wanted you to be a mother to my children and to grow old alongside me. Why can’t you see that you’re the one who broke me? Why can’t you see that simply apologizing isn’t enough? Tola, you fucking hurt me, and I’m going to have to wake up next to you for the rest of my life.

I’m being tortured. So, Tola, as long as I’m tortured by your fucking face for the rest of my life, you’ll be tortured by the face of my lover’s child, whom you’ll raise in our home.

I wanted this for you regardless of my family’s decision. You’ve been prancing around here way too happy lately. You needed to be reminded of your true place in this family,”

Nate realized the impact his words were having on his wife. He had said too much, but he didn’t want to take anything back because it was the truth. He paused to look at his wife, recalling a time when he adored her and everything she represented. The sensation only fueled his desire to inflict further pain on her. so she could feel everything she made him feel

As he returned to the dinner party, he said “And, Tola, you’re a big girl; I’m sure you can handle yourself with my business partners. I’m not standing up for you against anyone.

By the way, the fucking pearls look great on you. Wealth has always looked good on you; Keep enjoying it because that’s all you’ll ever have here”
